Development of the movement:
The first Brownie packs and Guide companies were opened in elementary and intermediate schools in Muscat, the capital of Oman, in 1972. Guiding soon spread to other parts of the country, and the National Organization for Scouts and Guides was established by Royal Decree in 1975.
The Omani Scout and Guide Organizations constitute the National Organization for Scouts and Guides. The two wings operate independently, but both have their headquarters in the same building in Muscat.
Programme:
The programme includes health education, character building, handicraft, community service and international communication aspects. Each branch participates in these activities at a level appropriate to the age group.
Relationship to society:
Girls and leaders have been actively involved in local community development projects, such as: the Convention on the Rights of the Child; illiteracy and developing maternal skills; maternal, child health care and adolescent health; environment and water resources conservation; co-operation with people with special needs.
Communication and Co-operation
NOSG continues to attend WAGGGS regional and world events, such as conferences, seminars, forums and jamborees. NOSG also participates in technical committees and other training programmes. The Omani Girl Guides embrace World Thinking Day by exchanging greeting cards with sister Associations around the world. In addition, the Organization is keen to strengthen its ties with appropriate governmental and non-governmental bodies in Oman to implement joint activities. Among these bodies are the Ministry of Education, Health, Social Affairs, Water Resources and the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Environment, UNICEF, WHO, FAO and the Women’s Association.
Media plays a vital role in publicizing various events of the Scouts and Guides in Oman as a whole, through local radio, TV and daily newspapers. The Organization also issues its own quarterly magazine which covers a wide range of activities, and it produces other articles to suit different levels in Scouting and Girl Guiding.
Training:
(Adult Resources)
NOSG implemented its training programme after being accredited by WAGGGS in 1993. The annual training plan is set up according to the needs of training committees from different regions of Oman.
The training scheme covers qualification of assistant training leaders and the leaders who are responsible for public relations. In addition there are specialized training courses in civil defence and health care.
Outdoor and Environmental Activities
Apart from school camp activities, the National Organization for Scouts and Guides plays an important role in organizing national camping events. Camps are held twice a year and run for a week to ten days at a time.
