girls worldwide say "we have the right to live in peace"

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) calls all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world to celebrate International Peace Day on 21 September. Peace Day was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1981 and is devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace. It’s a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a 24-hour cessation of hostilities.

“We have the right to live in peace” is one of the six rights in WAGGGS’ programme on Our Rights, Our Responsibilities. WAGGGS is strongly involved in building and promoting peace at all levels. For example, Alphonsine Kabagabo, Regional director WAGGGS Africa region, will attend the round table on Peace at the 7th Assembly of the People’s United Nations in October in Perugia, Italy and the WAGGGS UN team in Vienna contributes to the NGO Committee on Peace at the United Nations.

While most WAGGGS Member Organizations have programmes and projects related to peace education, WAGGGS is also involved in international peace projects. A recent major success was the Amahoro Amani project, which promotes peace in Africa, a joint project of WAGGGS and WOSM.

In the name of peace

In my country fathers burry their children
Children see angels before seeing a peaceful day
A piece of land is more important than a life
The love of power is more important than the power of love
Violence is alternative to creative solutions
The loudest voice is the silence of cemeteries

It isn't enough to talk about peace if we don’t know what we are talking about. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it.
“Peace” is a small word - but it requires everything we have, every quality, every strength, every dream, every high ideal, every value we believe in as girl scouts.

Just like leadership it is time to use our active learning methods to spread peace; at least we are sure that we have a same understanding of the word...
