Our Voice
Our Vision is to be the voice of girls and young women to build a better world. This is what advocacy is about. Advocacy is about speaking out to influence others and bring about positive change. This is why we created this section and named it our voice. We aim not only to speak out on behalf of girls and young women everywhere, but also to empower young women to speak out for themselves.
Ever since young women joined the Boy Scout Rally at Crystal Palace in 1909 demanding a place for girls, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have spoken out about issues which affect them.
WAGGGS has selected three key areas to speak out about – adolescent health, access to education and tackling trafficking of girls and young women.
In 2005, we conducted a major survey on adolescent health among 6,000 girls and young women in 100 countries. The results of this survey were turned into seven key messages which WAGGGS is advocating on.
Several definitions of advocacy exist already. This is WAGGGS’ definition of advocacy. Whatever the issue, advocacy for the World Association always includes speaking, doing and educating.
WAGGGS has had a voice at the UN for 60 years. Volunteer UN teams are strategically placed in six UN cities. These teams work closely with the UN and its programmes and agencies, for example ECOSOC, UNICEF, FAO und UNESCO. At the regional level, WAGGGS cooperates for example with the European Union and the African Union. Read more about WAGGGS work at the UN.
WAGGGS gives opportunities to young women to speak out and influence others at international events.
We encourage all of our Member Organizations to participate in taking action and speaking out, and they can do this by simply joining with an existing coalition and campaigning on a global day of action.
WAGGGS supports its Member Organizations by providing position statements, advocacy guidelines and training programmes. More information will be available shortly.
